Do Your Gums Bleed When You Brush Your Teeth?

Do Your Gums Bleed When You Brush Your Teeth?

Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing isn’t normal!  It’s an issue that needs to be addressed straightaway, and the professionals at Studfield Dental Group in Wantrina South can help!

Why Do Gums Bleed?

Plaque contains germs that compromise the health of our gums. When not properly removed, the plaque causes our gums to become irritated and inflamed, leading them to bleed when manipulated. This condition is known as gingivitis.

If not cleared up, gingivitis can lead to gum disease, which causes aggressive infection, bone damage, loose teeth and possible tooth loss.

What to Do

Don’t ignore the signs.  If your gums are bleeding, you may think that it was caused by brushing – so you may be tempted to stop brushing altogether. That’s a bad idea!  Proper brushing can help get your bleeding gums under control.

Practice an excellent oral hygiene routine at home, meaning brushing your teeth a minimum of two times a day, preferably after every meal.  When brushing, angle the bristles so that they get inside the gum pocket at the base of your teeth.

Flossing should be done at least once a day.  It floss is hard for you to maneuver around your teeth, then try using floss picks or a water flosser.

Finally, visiting our dentist in Wantrina South at least twice per year for cleanings will help keep your gums healthy.  During these appointments, we’ll remove plaque and tartar build-up that was left behind.

If your check-ups reveal that your cleaning techniques are lacking, or that you’re more susceptible to building up plaque, we may recommend special aids or more frequent professional cleanings.
